As if that wasn’t good enough, Holmes has also recently launched an informative blog to accompany his site.
A retired United Methodist pastor, Rev. Joseph A. Holmes, grew up in the gang ridden Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, NY. He found refuge from incessant street gang recruitment when he was introduced to camping in his younger days. Through his webstore, www.LovelyGiftsPlus.com, Holmes is now giving inner city kids a chance to get away from their neighborhoods to visit the vast splendor of the American outdoors.
Holmes started YourQualitySource.com, the host site for www.LovelyGiftsPlus.com, with little more than a desire to provide gifts and artifacts that represented his faith. “I want to help people and churches find resources for their faith,” he said. “I also wanted to offer wholesome, distinctive and memorable gift items for the people they care about.”
“I have a critical focus on gifts. Sometimes people will give ties and shirts for gifts,” continued Holmes. “I wanted to come up with gift items that people will treasure with fond memories of the giver.”
In addition to gifts, LovelyGiftsPlus.com also has a myriad of home décor items, religious incense, statuettes, and art, among other fine products. “We have products of distinction that will thrust a feeling of appreciation and quality,” said Holmes.
According to Holmes, with three new suppliers there will also be a continued growth of their online catalog with more faith items, figurines, glassware, urns, vases and other distinctive gifts.
With all these items on his site, Holmes has arranged for a portion of everything sold to go towards helping inner city youth, children in poverty and other children at risk to attend summer camp at Lakeshore United Methodist Assembly in Eva, TN.
To generate more interest in the site, LovelyGiftsPlus.com also has a corresponding blog (www.Lovely-Gifts-Plus.com) that goes into detail about some of the products they carry, including the histories of some of the items. Holmes is excited about the feedback he’ll get from people. “It’s a marvelous way to establish communication,” he said.
Unlike many other online retailers, Joe Holmes’ reasoning for setting up the site is completely altruistic. “I was steered away from gang involvement by my camping experience” he said. “I was shown how the world is much larger and more wonderful than the concrete jungle of the inner city ghetto where I lived.”
With many kids getting lost to violence, drugs and – more widely – relegated to television as their summertime baby sitter, Joe’s desire for kids to see the beauty of nature is one that he’s harbored since he got to experience camping for himself. “There is more to life than sit-comes, gang banging and making money selling dope.”
“Things are developing,” Holmes said. “We want kids to see that there’s a life outside of the violent and hopeless environment that they are faced with daily. Lakeshore UMA is a marvelous camp, on over 1,000 acres on the shores of Kentucky Lake and we’ve been working with them since 1995. As long as I’m alive I will do something to help Lakeshore continue blessing the lives of children at risk.”
